Endodontic treatment

Endodontic treatment (colloquially “denervation“) is a dental procedure performed in the doctor’s office or in a hospital, in order to preserve a tooth in the patient’s dental barrier and prevent its loss through extraction. It can be a therapeutic action, in cases where an injury has occurred to the tooth and has led to pulpitis (inflammation), in order for it (the specific tooth) to form part of a prosthetic restoration (“bridge“).

Why do I need endodontic treatment?

Because the tooth cannot heal itself. Without treatment, the infection will spread, the bone around the tooth will begin to degenerate, and the tooth may need to be extracted. In most cases the pain worsens and the patient needs immediate dental care.

When the tooth remains untreated for a long time, the only alternative is usually to extract the tooth. This can cause the surrounding teeth to become crooked, causing difficulties. Although extraction is cheaper, the gap that remains requires the placement of an implant or bridge, which will cost much more than endodontic treatment-denervation. When you have the choice it is always better to keep your own teeth in the mouth by treating them.

Denervation is a procedure done to remove damaged or dead pulp from the root canal of the tooth, by cleaning out the “diseased” pulp and then plugging the root canal. The root canal is filled with gutta-percha, a flexible rubber-like material, to prevent infection from reoccurring in the tooth. The tooth is then permanently sealed, or we place an abutment and a porcelain crown.

Procedure

The endodontic treatment in a specialized clinic is done in a single session and lasts from half to two hours depending on the difficulty and extent of the inflammation. It is now known that endodontic treatment is absolutely painless, and it has nothing to do with the horror stories about denervations that hurt excruciatingly during the operation. Initially, local anesthesia is administered to numb the area. An elastic membrane is then placed around the tooth to isolate it.

The tooth is put under the microscope to properly remove the decay and find all the root canals. Medicines are placed inside the root canals to fight bacteria. After disinfecting all the root canals the endodontist fills the root canals with gutta-percha. After the denervation procedure, permanent sealing can be done immediately.
If too much tooth substance is missing, a metal post may be placed over the root canal to strengthen the tooth. When filled, the area is permanently sealed. Finally, a porcelain crown (case) is usually placed over the tooth to strengthen its structure and improve its appearance in the event that we have a very large change in color that cannot be covered by simple whitening.
