Conventional and invasive radiological examinations and CT scans use radiation as a medium. Today’s technology has provided us with modern machines that minimize the doses of radiation administered to the examinee, minimizing the biological effects.
Diagnostic radiology is a relatively recent medical specialty that emerged from the split of the older specialty of radiology. Modern radiodiagnostics are engaged in the study of diagnostic images produced by various methods and the extraction of diagnostic conclusions.
The first compound of the name comes from X-rays, which was the first and only initially imaging medium. Today there are other means of imaging, such as ultrasound, nuclear magnetic resonance, which work without the use of X-rays. Also, the latest PET-scan is used today, which is a scintigraphy that uses proton radiation to produce images of parts of the body.
X-rays are also used in computerized tomography (commonly known as computed tomography), a relatively more modern imaging method used by modern radiodiagnostics.
In radiodiagnosis, in addition to radiodiagnostic doctors, radiologist technologists (graduates of higher education) are also involved, a recent term that replaced “viewer operators”, which is now only used for secondary education graduates. Their job is not to diagnose, but to create the images that the radiodiagnostic doctor studies.
Finally, recent international guidelines speak of replacing techniques that use X-rays, as long as the same information can be obtained, with other techniques that do not use X-rays, e.g. ultrasounds, magnetic resonance, etc. Of course, which technique will give the best result for the patient, should be the result of a medical decision, but also of the equipment available each time.
In case the conservative treatment does not bring the desired results, then microsurgery can be applied, which aims at the most effective mechanical cleaning of the inflammation and the regeneration of the bone. The latter is carried out by placing bone grafts or membranes of directed tissue regeneration.
