The treatment of moderate and advanced forms of periodontal disease as it was done until now usually included, in addition to the initial conservative phase of treatment, a surgical phase. In this phase the gums are detached with the help of a scalpel, the roots of the teeth are cleaned and the gums are put back in place with stitches. After these operations there is usually moderate discomfort and pain that is easily controlled with painkillers.
Although the procedure itself can be almost painless, the area is usually numbed in the initial treatment for the patient’s comfort. Subsequent visits for the use of the Laser do not require anesthesia. After the procedure this discomfort, if present, is usually minimal and of short duration.
Depending on the severity of the patient’s periodontal disease, treatment can be done in one office visit or multiple visits.
Estimated treatment time is checked with patients when discussing their treatment plan. Some procedures done with dental lasers do not require anesthesia. Laser dentistry minimizes bleeding because the high-energy light beam enhances blood clotting from exposed blood vessels, thereby inhibiting blood loss. Bacterial infections are minimized because the high-energy beam “sterilizes” the area and finally, damage to surrounding tissues is minimized with wounds healing faster.
