What are cavities? <\/span><\/h4>\n

A cavity, also called a cavity, is a hole that forms in your tooth. Cavities start small and gradually become larger when left untreated.     Tooth cavities are caused by plaque, a sticky substance that attaches to the teeth. Plaque is a combination of: <\/span><\/p>\n

    • bacteria <\/span><\/li>\n
    • saliva <\/span><\/li>\n
    • acid <\/span><\/li>\n
    • food particles<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Everyone has bacteria in their mouth. After you eat or drink sugary foods, bacteria in your mouth turn the sugar into acid. Plaque starts forming on your teeth right after you eat or drink anything sugary. This is why regular brushing is important. <\/span><\/p>\n

      Plaque sticks to your teeth and the acid in plaque can slowly erode tooth enamel. Enamel is a hard, protective coating on your teeth that protects against tooth decay. As your tooth enamel weakens, your risk for tooth decay increases. <\/span><\/p>\n

      Everyone is at risk for tooth decay, but some people are at greater risk. Risk factors include: <\/span><\/p>\n

      • too many sugary or acidic foods and drinks <\/span><\/li>\n
      • a poor oral hygiene routine, such as not brushing or flossing daily; <\/span><\/li>\n
      • they don’t get enough fluoride <\/span><\/li>\n
      • dry mouth<\/span><\/li>\n
      • eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia <\/span><\/li>\n
      • acid reflux, which can result in stomach acid damaging the enamel of your teeth <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
